DEKRA & Mesekon: Qualified manufacturing method offers competitive edge

The fabrication of demanding steel structures is governed by strict standards in order to, for instance, meet the corrosion and strength requirements for end products. In practice, the fabricating company must qualify the manufacturing methods required by the customer and assure the durability and safety of the end product through various tests.

“Together with DEKRA, we have carried out procedure tests through which we have qualified welding procedures that meet the customer’s specifications. The completed procedure tests were unusual as they were carried out based on a so-called hybrid model. Many customer projects require simultaneous compliance with several standards in the welding process, including the NORSOK and ASME standards alongside the EN standard. Thanks to the procedure tests, we now have qualified procedures that meet customer specifications, which benefits everyone,” says Mesekon’s Sales Director Tero Nättiaho.

“DEKRA has a comprehensive range of services that meets our needs. DEKRA’s NDT inspectors are trained and certified in accordance with ISO 9712. They offer not only conventional NDT services, but also specialist services for more advanced testing,” Nättiaho adds.

“Successful cooperation also requires well-matched working methods. Smoother cooperation is guaranteed through digital documentation and data transfer between systems. The qualification certificates issued by DEKRA are transferred electronically into welding quality management software used in the industry, for example,” says Nättiaho.

DEKRA’s laboratories can carry out all of the testing required for verifying the quality of a welding procedure.
“In our line of work, strength and special requirements such as impact toughness must be up to par. Otherwise bridges collapse and towers fall,” Nättiaho points out.

DEKRA’s DT laboratory and Mesekon’s production facilities are both located in Turku, Finland.
“The laboratory’s wide range of services and close vicinity to us are a clear benefit – these jobs often have a tight schedule,” Nättiaho sums up.
